Occipital implants are ideal for augmenting a severely flattened occiput. This results in significant esthetic improvements to the contour of the back of the head.
Women often have the advantage of cleverly concealing a flattened back of the head with their hair.
However, it’s quite different with men. Short hairstyles make the shape of the back of the head stand out clearly.
If you wish to have corrections made to the back of your head, please contact our team at the Yuveo Klinik for Plastic and Esthetic Surgery in Düsseldorf. We will be very happy to advise you!

Characteristics of Occipital Implants
Occipital implants are custom-made and give new volume to the flattened back of the head.
Occipital Implants
Esthetic Occipital Augmentation
If there are no contraindications to the surgery, the implant wil be plannend and manufactured patient-specifically. Moreover, the surgery will be planned in detail.
Surgery
The occipital augmentation is performed in our Yuveo Klinik by our plastic surgeons and accompanied by our anesthesia team, which supervises the general anesthesia.
During the surgery, which lasts about 2 to 3 hours, the implant is placed directly on the bone and covered with the periosteum and the soft tissue.
The wound is stapled, and the staples remain in place for about 2 to 3 weeks, which helps to improve hemostasis and healing.
You will remain an inpatient at the clinic for one day.
Aftercare
Aftercare includes cooling, head bandage, and removal of the staples. In addition, we ask you to come to us for certain check-ups.
Occipital Implants - More Details
Cause for flattened back of the head
Asymmetrical growth and malformations are not uncommon at the back of the head.
Often the positional flattening of the back of the head already occurs at baby age. Plastic surgeons also refer to this as a cranial deformity or plagiocephalus.
As a precaution against such changes in the shape of the baby’s head, care can be taken to avoid lying on one side. Better change positions!
Custom-made implants
The individual planning and fabrication of occipital implants takes your personal wishes into account.
We design the implant on a 3D model of your head after 3D imaging and clinical diagnostics.
We create a mold template that serves as the basis for the fabrication of the PEEK or silicone implant.
Back of the head augmentation with PEEK or silicone
Back of the head implants made of PEEK (medical plastic) or silicone are easy to handle, flexible to fit and can be shaped very well.
Advantages of these implants
- Lasting beautiful result
- They can be used to make very beautiful esthetic corrections in the long term.
- After expert insertion with optimal positioning, the occipital implants can remain in the body for a lifetime.
- The special material is very resilient and stable.
No slipping
Once the occipital implants have grown in under the periosteum, they are practically impossible to slip out of place.
Aftercare
After the surgery, you will remain an inpatient at our Yuveo Klinik for one day.
We will bandage your head postoperatively to contain the swelling.
By consistently cooling the surgical site and taking it easy the next time, you will contribute to the optimal healing process.
The effects of the surgical procedure should have completely subsided after about six weeks.
Possible Complications
As with any surgical procedure, secondary bleeding, inflammation and wound healing problems may occur.
Wound water develops, but naturally recedes after a short time. Rarely do we have to puncture these fluid collections.
We will explain this to you in advance during the consultation.
